How to Install OptiFine

1. Download OptiFine. 


In order to install the OptiFine mod on your Windows or Mac computer, you'll need to download the OptiFine JAR file:

Go to https://www.optifine.online/in your computer's web browser.Click Download to the right of the top OptiFine link under the "OptiFine HD Ultra" heading.Wait 5 seconds, then click SKIP AD in the top-right corner of the screen (you may first need to click Continue on the ad-blocker warning).Click the Download OptiFine link in the middle of the page.Click Keep or Allow if your browser warns you that OptiFine might be dangerous.

2 Update Minecraft

As of November 2019, the most recent version of Minecraft is 1.14.4; if you're running a lower version than 1.12, you'll need to update Minecraft by opening its launcher, waiting for the newest version of Minecraft to download, and signing back into your Minecraft account.

3 Make sure you have Minecraft Forge installed if necessary. 


If you plan on running OptiFine as a mod inside of Minecraft Forge, you'll need to have Forge installed.

Tip: You can skip this step if you want to run OptiFine as a separate Minecraft configuration, which is arguably easier than installing Forge if you don't already have it.

4 Determine your Minecraft installation path if necessary. 

If you plan on installing OptiFine as its own Minecraft configuration instead of using Forge, you'll need to know the path to the folder in which Minecraft is installed. To find it, do the following:

Open the Minecraft launcher by clicking or double-clicking the Minecraft app icon.Click the Launch options tab.Click Latest release.Click the "Game directory" switch.Copy the game directory address by selecting the address in the "Game directory" text field and then pressing Ctrl+C (Windows) or ⌘ Command+C (Mac).Part

2 Using Forge

1. Copy the OptiFine file. Click once the OptiFine setup file you downloaded, then press either Ctrl+C (Windows) or ⌘ Command+C (Mac).2. Open the Minecraft launcher. Click or double-click the Minecraft app icon, which resembles a grassy block of dirt. This will prompt the Minecraft launcher window to pop up.3. Click the Launch options tab. It's in the upper-right side of the window.Tip: If you don't see this option, first click ☰ in the top-right corner of the Minecraft window.4. Click Latest release. This option is in the middle of the window. Doing so opens the information page for your Minecraft installation.5. Open the Minecraft folder. Click the green, right-facing arrow to the right of the "Game directory" text box. This will bring up the Minecraft installation folder in a File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window.6. Double-click the "mods" folder. It should be in the middle of the window; doing so will open the "mods" folder. If there isn't a "mods" folder, create one by doing the following:Windows — Right-click a blank space in the folder, select New, click Folder, type in mods (do not capitalize the title), and press ↵ Enter.Mac — Click a blank space in the folder, click File, click New Folder, type in mods (do not capitalize the title), and press ⏎ Return.7. Paste in the OptiFine file. Press either Ctrl+V (Windows) or ⌘ Command+V (Mac) to do so. You should see the OptiFine file appear in the folder after a second or so.You can also just click and drag the OptiFine file into the "mods" folder if you don't want to keep a copy of the original download.8. Run OptiFine via Forge. In order to run OptiFine through Minecraft Forge, do the following:Click the News tab in the Minecraft launcher window.Click the upward-facing arrow to the right of PLAY.Click forge.Click PLAY.Part3Using OptiFine Only


1. Double-click the OptiFine setup file. Doing so will prompt an installation window to appear.Note: On a Mac, Control-click the file, then click Open in the resulting drop-down menu.2. Click ⋯. It's to the right of the "Folder" address bar in the middle of the pop-up window. Doing so opens a new window.3. Enter the copied game directory address. Press Ctrl+V (Windows) or ⌘ Command+V (Mac) to paste in the copied address, then press ↵ Enter. This will ensure that OptiFine installs to your Minecraft directory.4. Click Install. It's at the bottom of the OptiFine window.5. Click OK when prompted. This confirms that OptiFine installed successfully.6. Open the Minecraft launcher. Click or double-click the Minecraft app icon, which resembles a grassy block of dirt. Doing so brings up the Minecraft launcher window.7. Click Launch options. It's a tab in the upper-right corner of the window.Tip: If you don't see this option, first click ☰ in the top-right corner of the Minecraft window.8. Click Add new. This option is near the top of the list of Minecraft versions. Doing so brings up a page with several text boxes.9. Enter a name. In the "Name" text box, enter a name for your OptiFine configuration.Tip: You can name this whatever you want as long as you'll remember that your selected name pertains to OptiFine.10. Click the "Version" drop-down box. It's below the "Name" box. Doing so prompts a drop-down menu.11. Select the "OptiFine" release. This is the drop-down menu option that has "OptiFine" and the current version number of your OptiFine installation in the title.12. Click Save. It's a green button at the bottom of the window.13. Run the OptiFine version of Minecraft. In order to select OptiFine as the version of Minecraft to run, do the following:Click the News tab in the Minecraft launcher window.Click the upward-facing arrow to the right of PLAY.Click your OptiFine configuration's name.Click PLAY.
